On the Thika-Garissa highway, a Kenyan policeman named Jamal Bare Mohamed made a surprising discovery: he could bank between Sh200,000 to Sh500,000 every month, against his monthly police pay of some Sh35,000.
Over six years, Mohamed deposited a staggering Sh26 million, which caught the attention of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.
Members of the public had complained of being extorted by the officer before he was filmed in action.
Recently, Mohamed surrendered the Sh26 million loot to the government, retaining a piece of land in Thika worth Sh3 million and a vehicle he had bought during that period.
He claimed that his livestock business brought him legitimate income that he used to acquire the properties.
It is unclear if Mohamed retains his police job, but if he does, he might prove invaluable as a toll attendant on Mombasa Road, given his skills in revenue collection.
