On November 3, 2021, the African Union (AU) reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace and security in Africa, a crucial step towards achieving sustainable development on the continent.
Bankole Adeoye, the AU's Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of instability in Africa during a high-level forum on silencing guns in the new decade in Nairobi. He stated, "We will not be indifferent in a situation where peace and security in Africa is threatened," highlighting the AU's resolve to take proactive measures to prevent conflicts.
The AU has developed an early warning response mechanism to identify and address potential conflicts before they escalate. Adeoye urged governments to address issues of governance, proliferation of weapons, and high levels of youth unemployment, which are major drivers of instability in the region.
The AU has a zero-tolerance policy towards unconstitutional changes of government, and Adeoye emphasized that "no coup is justified". The organization is ready to intervene and take necessary steps to suspend any member state that engages in such actions.
The AU's commitment to promoting democracy and good governance is aimed at ensuring that citizens can benefit from peace dividends. Adeoye stated that the pan-African body is ready to support stakeholders in every country to promote inclusive engagement that will reduce conflict.
