Prof Isaac Ongubo Kibwage, the newly appointed Vice Chancellor of Egerton University, is facing a court challenge to his appointment, barely a month after taking office.

The petition, filed by the Trusted Society of Human Rights Alliance, claims that Prof Kibwage lacks the ethical standards and integrity required for the position, as outlined in Chapter Six of the Constitution.

The group alleges that the university's council ignored evidence that Prof Kibwage was unsuitable for the appointment and that he has a record of nepotism and tribalism in his previous capacities.

They also argue that the recruitment process was unprocedural and that the appointment was not approved by the Cabinet Secretary or conducted within university premises.

Prof Kibwage has denied the allegations, saying that his appointment was legally done through a competitive process and that the petition is malicious and false in material facts.

Justice Hellen Wasilwa has ordered for the status quo at the institution to be maintained until November 16, when she will give new directions.
