Published on November 3, 2021, the US State Department announced that a special envoy would travel to Ethiopia to seek a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
Jeffrey Feltman, the special envoy for the Horn of Africa, will hold talks with Ethiopian officials on Thursday and Friday to encourage dialogue and a commitment to peace.
His trip comes as the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) has made significant territorial gains and is marching southward towards the capital Addis Ababa.
The US has expressed growing concern over the expansion of combat operations and intercommunal violence in Ethiopia, with a State Department spokesperson stating, "The United States is increasingly troubled by the expansion of combat operations and intercommunal violence in Ethiopia and is closely monitoring the situation."
Despite the US removing Ethiopia from a key trade pact due to allegations of human rights abuses, Feltman's trip aims to promote a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
