On November 3, 2021, South Africa-based electric vehicle manufacturer Agilitee Africa announced its expansion to Nairobi, Kenya, marking a significant step in its East African market entry.
According to Agilitee Africa's Chief Executive Officer Mandla Lamba, the company plans to invest Sh111.2 million in its Nairobi-based subsidiary, Agilitee East Africa.
"We will officially launch our operations in Kenya in early December this year. Currently, we are marketing our products and the response is very positive," said Dr. Lamba.
Agilitee East Africa has been granted a certificate to operate in Kenya, with the Nairobi subsidiary serving as the company's headquarters for East Africa.
The company has also established a base in West Africa, with its headquarters in Nigeria, and plans to set up an assembly plant in Zimbabwe for electric vehicles, motorcycles, and scooters.
"We intend to penetrate into all parts of Africa. We will in the long run set up assembly plants in some countries," said Lamba.
Agilitee electric vehicles are powered by solar energy and have a backup battery, reducing reliance on the grid and emissions that contribute to climate change and smog.
Kenya is one of the biggest markets for second-hand vehicles, which have been blamed for emitting higher levels of carbon dioxide. Agilitee's technology can improve public health and reduce ecological damage.
