On November 3, 2021, Villarreal coach Unai Emery revealed that Newcastle United have shown interest in appointing him as their coach, but he clarified that there has been no formal offer from the Premier League club.

Emery made the statement after Villarreal's 2-0 victory over Young Boys in the Champions League, a result that left them level on points with Manchester United in Group F.

When asked about the interest from Newcastle, Emery stated, "There has been interest but I have spent the whole day thinking about the game. There is no offer."

Emery, who led Villarreal to their first major trophy by winning the Europa League last season, emphasized that he is focused on his current role and has not said no to Newcastle. He expressed his respect for the club and its president, stating, "I have not said no. I have a lot of respect for the club and the players and maximum respect for the president. If there is something more concrete I will talk with the president."

Emery's comments come as Newcastle seek a replacement for Steve Bruce, who was sacked last month. The team currently sits 19th in the table and is in need of a new coach to lead them.
