On November 3, 2021, a devastating explosion rocked the Sankuri district in Lamu county, leaving one person dead and two others critically injured.
The incident occurred when a car collided with an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by suspected al Shabaab terrorists.
Ali Hamza Kimango, a 28-year-old Aweer Community Conservancy ranger, lost his life in the blast. He was traveling in a county bowser that was supplying water to people in the Boni Forest region.
According to Lamu county commissioner Irungu Macharia, the truck driver and a high school student who hitched a lift suffered severe burns in the explosion.
"The driver suffered serious burns on the chest and hands, while the student's injuries are grave as his lower body was literally blown apart," Macharia said.
He added that they suspect the attackers may be hiding amongst the local community and are urging them to provide information that can help identify the culprits.
The Sankuri area falls within the multiagency security Operation Amani Boni zones, which was launched in September 2015 to flush out militants from the expansive Boni Forest.
