Published on November 3, 2021, the US embassy in Ethiopia issued a warning to American citizens in the country, advising them to consider leaving amid the ongoing conflict.

The embassy cited a significant deterioration in the security environment, with escalating armed conflict and civil unrest in Amhara, Afar, and Tigray regions.

According to the embassy, a portion of the A2 highway connecting Addis Ababa to cities in the north has been restricted by federal authorities, leading to disruptions, stranded travelers, and a non-permissive travel environment.

The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) rebel group has been engaged in a brutal year-long war against Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government.

As a result, the US embassy has restricted its staff from traveling outside Addis Ababa city limits, and Americans are advised to reconsider travel to Ethiopia and prepare to leave the country.
