On July 5, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko proposed increasing parking fees within the city centre from Ksh 200 to Ksh 400.

The move aims to increase revenue and decongest the Central Business District (CBD), according to a statement from City Hall.

However, the proposal contradicts Sonko's campaign promise to cut parking fees in half.

Currently, parking revenue makes up the highest grossing revenue stream, with daily earnings estimated at an average of Ksh 80 million to Ksh 100 million.

Under the proposed plan, motorists within the CBD will pay Ksh 400, while those parking outside the city centre will pay Ksh 300.

Monthly tickets will cost Ksh 7,000, and annual payments will be hiked to Ksh 55,000.

Additionally, the proposal comes after JamboPay exited as the city's parking services provider, leaving motorists in confusion.

City Hall's parking revenues were at Ksh 10.9 billion at the end of the 2016/17 financial year.
