On the eve of the COVID-19 pandemic, medical insurance was a rare commodity in Kenya, viewed as a luxury by many working-age individuals due to limited public awareness.
As the pandemic spread, many businesses shut down, leaving people without jobs and struggling to pay medical bills. The situation was dire, with some individuals unable to afford ICU beds in good hospitals, resulting in tragic losses.
However, those who had medical insurance policies, often obtained from companies like Octagon Africa, were able to access ICU beds without delay. For instance, individuals who paid a premium of Kshs. 28,000 had their medical bills cleared up to Kshs. 500,000.

A medical insurance policy offers numerous benefits, including coverage for consultation fees, specialist visits, hospitalization expenses, medication costs, and laboratory tests.
