On Sunday night, a fire incident at Buruburu Girls Secondary School in Nairobi County left 10 students hospitalised. The students were rushed to nearby Metropolitan and Jamaa hospitals in Buruburu after the fire broke out in a dormitory at around 5pm.

According to Principal Carol Maina, the school has 45 cubicles, and only one caught fire during the incident. The cubicle had 10 students inside, who were taken to hospital for treatment.

Principal Maina called for calm among parents, assuring them that the school management would update them on the safety of the students, including those who were injured. She also stated that the school administration had called in the police to ensure the safety of the girls, adding that not everyone who came to the school was a parent.

A parent's representative, who is a Form Four parent, also assured parents to remain calm, stating that the fire had been contained and things were under control. He urged those who had gained access to the school compound to leave for the safety of the students, warning that not everyone present was a parent.

Police were forced to block members of the public from entering the school's compound for fear of the security of the students who were inside the school. Buruburu Sub-County Police Commander Francis Kamau stated that investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the fire.
