On Sunday evening, a fire ravaged a dormitory at Buruburu Girls Secondary School, sending students fleeing for their lives and prompting a chaotic scene as anxious parents arrived to check on their children.
According to eyewitness Diana Mwangangi, who rushed to the scene after hearing students screaming for help, students were seen jumping from as high as the third floor as smoke billowed from the building.
Police were forced to block members of the public from entering the school compound for fear of the security of the students who were inside. The school's administration struggled to calm down the parents who had flocked the institution demanding to see their daughters.
Firefighters were called in to put out the blaze, and injured students were rushed to the nearby Metropolitan Hospital. Buruburu Sub-County Police Commander Francis Kamau confirmed the incident, stating that officers and firefighters were at the scene, but it was still too early to know the extent of the damage.
