Chelsea opened a three-point gap in the English Premier League table after a convincing 3-0 win over Newcastle United at St James's Park on Saturday, October 31, 2021.
Reece James scored two goals, including one in the 77th minute, to help Chelsea secure the win. The first goal came in the 65th minute when James was set up by Callum Hudson-Odoi, and the second was a result of a combination between James and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Chelsea's win was a result of a strong performance, with Newcastle struggling to find their footing throughout the game. The Magpies had a few chances, but were unable to capitalize on them, with Callum Wilson's shot hitting the post in the first half.
Chelsea's win marked their first under new coach Thomas Tuchel, who replaced Frank Lampard earlier in the season. The Blues are now in second place in the EPL table, three points ahead of their closest rivals.
Elsewhere in the EPL, Liverpool drew 2-2 with Brighton at Anfield, while Manchester City were defeated 2-0 by Crystal Palace at Etihad Stadium. The match at St James's Park was attended by a crowd of 52,209, the largest since the Saudi Arabia-backed takeover of the club.
