On October 30, 2021, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) raised concerns over the proliferation of counterfeit alcoholic drinks in Meru and surrounding counties.
Deputy Commissioner Nicholas Kinoti, in charge of Meru and 11 other counties, stated that illegal traders have infiltrated the fast-moving products market, including alcoholic drinks.
During a tree planting exercise at Chugu Secondary School in Imenti North, Kinoti emphasized that KRA and other State agencies have launched a campaign against counterfeit products as part of efforts to achieve the Big Four Agenda.
According to Kinoti, counterfeit alcoholic drinks have caused unfair competition to legitimate businesses and deprived KRA of revenue.
“Our biggest problem is in liquor. People legally doing business cannot compete with those supplying unapproved products,” Kinoti said.
