On October 30, 2021, the Confederation of African Football (Caf) announced that Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums would no longer be allowed to host international matches due to substandard quality.

The decision was made after both facilities failed to meet minimum set standards during inspections conducted by Caf ahead of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

According to a Caf letter, the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani did not meet the set minimum Caf stadium requirements and would not be approved for the qualifying matches of the 2022 Qatar Fifa World Cup.

However, Nyayo National Stadium was granted temporary approval to host the Harambee Stars' remaining World Cup qualifiers, but only after implementing all the Caf remarks.

The ban has significant implications for Kenya, as the national team will now have to host international games outside the country. The team will host Rwanda in one of the two remaining World Cup qualifiers.

This decision also affects Gor Mahia and Tusker FC, who are participating in the Caf Confederation Cup. Tusker will face CS Sfaxien of Tunisia, while Gor Mahia will battle AS Otoho d'Oyo of Congo in the play-offs set for November.
