On Friday morning, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) cornered a gang of car thieves between Githurai and Mwiki areas in Kiambu County.

According to the DCI, the gang had been operating in the area, and officers had been keeping a night-long vigil to monitor their activities.

At around 3:30 am, the sleuths observed some suspicious activity by four men onboard a KBZ 113S Toyota Probox, which was heading towards the murram road connecting Mwiki-Kasarani and Githurai 45 roads.

Police signaled the vehicle to pull over, but the driver sped off, prompting a police chase.

During the chase, the gang members opened fire at the police, but in the ensuing melee, three of the four members were killed while one escaped with gunshot wounds.

The DCI has launched a manhunt for the escaped suspect, who is believed to have sustained injuries during the shootout.

Police recovered the car used in the operation, as well as a pistol, which was later claimed by a Kayole-based man.
