On October 29, 2021, a joint team of detectives from Githurai, Kimbo, and Mwiki neutralized three armed suspects in a fierce shootout in Nairobi's Ruiru sub-county.

The suspects were believed to be part of a car theft syndicate operating in the area. They were killed after a hot chase following a security check request that they declined.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI), the joint team of officers had been patrolling the area following reports of motor vehicle theft. The suspects were in a Toyota Probox with registration number KBZ 113S when they were spotted by the officers.

When the officers requested a security check, the suspects opened fire and sped off. The officers gave chase, and a gun battle ensued. Three of the four-man gang were killed, while one managed to escape with gunshot wounds.

The DCI stated that none of their officers were injured in the melee. A firearm was recovered at the scene, along with the vehicle's ignition set and an improvised metallic rod used as a key to ignite the vehicle.

The vehicle's owner, a resident of Kayole, was contacted by the police and confirmed that the recovered vehicle was his. The bodies of the victims were moved to a city morgue awaiting identification.
