On October 27, 2021, Pope Francis announced the appointment of Archbishop Phillip Anyolo as the new Archbishop of Nairobi Archdiocese, effective immediately.

Archbishop Anyolo succeeds Archbishop Emeritus John Cardinal Njue, who retired on January 4, 2021, after serving the Archdiocese for 13 years. During his retirement, Auxiliary Bishop David Kamau served as the Apostolic Administrator.

Archbishop Anyolo, who hails from Tongeren in Bungoma County, has a rich history in the Catholic Church. He was ordained as a priest on October 15, 1983, and later served as the Bishop of Kericho Diocese from December 6, 1995, and Homa Bay Diocese from May 23, 2003, until his appointment as Archbishop of Kisumu on November 15, 2018.

As the fifth Archbishop of Nairobi Archdiocese, Archbishop Anyolo will lead the Archdiocese, which has been under the guidance of Auxiliary Bishop David Kamau since Archbishop Njue's retirement.

Archbishop Anyolo's appointment was announced by Pope Francis in Rome, at noon Rome time, which is 1:00 p.m. in Kenya.
