On October 29, 2021, the Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed ordered an audit on the Football Kenya Federation's (FKF) books, sparking a potential showdown between the federation's president Nick Mwendwa and the government.
The audit, which is set to be conducted by a multi-agency team comprising the Auditor General, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and Sports Registrar, has been blessed by Fifa, the world governing body of football.
However, Mwendwa has hit back at Sports Principal Secretary Joe Okudo, who confirmed the audit in Parliament, calling him a 'liar' for invoking Fifa's name.
But what's more interesting is the presence of three Fifa officials in Nairobi, who arrived on an unspecified mission days after Mohamed ordered the audit. They have since camped at the federation's headquarters in Kasarani without addressing the media.
Their presence has raised speculation that Fifa could be monitoring the government's moves in anticipation of its policy on 'government interference' in football matters, which is normally punishable by a ban on international football activities.
