Safaricom's Stephen Chege Takes on New Role at Vodacom

Stephen Chege, a seasoned executive with over 15 years of experience at Safaricom, has taken on a new challenge as Vodacom Group Chief External Affairs Officer, effective November 15, 2021.

Reporting to Vodacom Group CEO Shameel Joosub, Chege will be based at Vodacom Headquarters in Johannesburg and will oversee Group Regulatory, External and Corporate Affairs, Public Policy, Communication Strategy, Media Relationships, Group Corporate Social Investment (CSI), and Sustainability.

His new role will cover Vodacom Group markets in South Africa, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Lesotho, and Vodafone Ghana, while also supporting Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC and Safaricom PLC.

Chege has been the Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Safaricom PLC since 2015 and has risen through the ranks since joining the company in 2006 as In-House Counsel.

He holds a Bachelor of Laws, a Master of Laws in International Trade & Investment Law, is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, and Notary Public, as well as a Certified Public Secretary.

On a related note, Chege was recently appointed as a Director at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), alongside Donald Wangunyu.
