On October 28, a devastating fire swept through Kanzokea Forest in Kangundo, Machakos County, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
According to Kangundo Central Member of County Assembly Moses Musyoka, the fire started at around 7pm, fueled by dry conditions in the area.
“It’s currently dry in Machakos. As a result, the fire spread so fast as it burnt dry leaves and twigs,” Musyoka explained to The Standard.
Despite efforts by the Machakos firefighting team to put out the inferno, the fire continued to rage, with some speculating that a small fire lit in a neighbouring homestead may have spread into the woodlands.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported during the incident, according to police.
Kanzokea Forest is one of the gazetted water catchment areas in Machakos County, and the fire is a cause for concern.
