Lamu: Coast Mariners Warned to Obey Maritime Laws

Lamu County Deputy Commissioner Michael Yator has urged all maritime service providers to adhere to maritime laws to prevent accidents.

Speaking during a graduation ceremony for 300 newly trained boat and ship captains, Yator emphasized the importance of adhering to maritime laws, particularly with regards to overloading and improper cargo handling, which can lead to disasters.

Yator stated that the Lamu County security department is closely monitoring the situation to ensure that maritime laws are fully respected.

The training was conducted by the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA). KMA Director General Robert Njue said the training, which also targeted boat operators on Lake Victoria in Nyanza and Western regions, aimed at improving safety in marine transportation.

Meanwhile, KMA Chairman Geoffrey Mwango urged boat owners to register their vessels to facilitate easy rescue operations in case of accidents.

Lamu County Deputy Governor Abdulhakim Aboud pledged the county's commitment to working with KMA and other stakeholders to enhance maritime safety in Lamu.
