On October 29, 2021, Monterrey made history by clinching their fifth CONCACAF Champions League title and securing a place in the Club World Cup. The victory came after a thrilling match against Club America, which ended 1-0 in favor of Monterrey.
Argentina-born Mexico international striker Rogelio Funes Mori scored the winning goal in the ninth minute, sidefooting the ball into the net after a miskicked clearance from America defender Sebastian Caceres. The goal was initially shrouded in controversy, with Funes Mori appearing to be in an offside position when Jesus Gallardo's low cross caused chaos in the America defense.
However, a VAR review cleared Funes Mori of any wrongdoing, and the goal stood. The match was filled with drama, including a frantic finale deep into stoppage time, where America hit the woodwork and a lengthy VAR review for a possible handball against Monterrey.
Despite the controversy, Monterrey emerged victorious, securing their fifth CONCACAF Champions League title and joining the ranks of their previous titles in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2019. The victory also earned them a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup, which will take place in the United Arab Emirates in early 2022.
