Laikipia Nature Conservancy, a hotspot for banditry, witnessed a tragic incident on October 27, 2021, when three police officers lost their lives in a fierce shootout with bandits.
The officers, who were part of a multi-agency team, were ambushed by the bandits at the Ol Moran Police Station, leading to the tragic loss of life.
Interior CS Fred Matiang'i had earlier constituted a multi-agency team to flush out the bandits and restore peace in the area.
On October 13, 2021, Matiang'i expressed concern over the continued reign of terror by bandits despite efforts to enforce peace, noting that they had derived new ways to commit crimes, including disguising themselves as herders.
As part of the efforts to combat the bandits, the government had started training a special security unit to flush out the brigands in the Laikipia area.
Interior CS Matiang'i had vowed to make regular helicopter surveillance in the area to ensure the operation was ruthless and effective.
