On October 27, 2021, a 98-year-old woman was brutally attacked and raped in her home in Namunyiri, Likuyani sub-county, Kakamega.
The elderly woman, who lives alone, reported that her assailant broke into her house through a window and committed the heinous act.
"I tried to fight back but he overpowered me. I tried to raise alarm but he put a piece of cloth in my mouth and tried to strangle me. I had to surrender," the traumatised woman said.
She added that the attacker stormed her house around 2am and raped her repeatedly, leaving her unconscious.
The victim was rescued on Thursday morning and taken to Mabusi health centre, where a medical report confirmed that she had been raped.
Family members have accused a 30-year-old man, who they claim is a well-known criminal, of committing the crime.
Area assistant chief Caroline Vugutsa assured that the police have launched investigations into the incident and will ensure justice is served.
