On October 28, 2021, former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga unveiled a political movement to challenge the executive's disregard for the constitution and the rule of law.
Mutunga, who is the convener of the United Political Front (UPF), a coalition of the United Green Movement, the Communist Party of Kenya, and the Ukweli Party, said the movement aims to rally Kenyans to reconstruct the nation towards adherence to the rule of law.
The UPF has identified several key issues to tackle, including the deportation of opposition activist Miguna Miguna in March 2018 and the disregard of court orders by the Jubilee government.
Speaking to reporters, Mutunga said, 'We are standing to be counted in demanding swift end to the lawless trajectory that the Presidency has proven to prefer over constitutionalism and the rule of law.'
The UPF has vowed to continue pushing for Miguna's return, with Booker Ngesa of the Communist Party of Kenya stating, 'We shall do whatsoever we can to ensure Miguna comes to the country.'
Augustine Neto, co-leader of the United Green Movement, added, 'It's a coordinated effort whether by plane or submarine we will have him back.'
Mutunga also criticized President Uhuru Kenyatta's decision to omit Justices Aggrey Muchelule, George Odunga, Weldon Korir, and Joel Ngugi from judicial appointments, terming it 'political execution.'
He argued that the President's action had ethnicized the issue and that the judges should be sworn in by Chief Justice Martha Koome.
