On October 27, 2021, President Uhuru Kenyatta officially opened the IGAD Climate Prediction and Application Centre (ICPAC) in Kajiado County, marking a significant step towards addressing climate change in the region.

Kenya has made considerable progress in green energy utilization, with the country's continued investments in renewable energy earning global recognition. The President emphasized the importance of partnering with stakeholders like IGAD in promoting green industries.

"We are committed to being leaders in achieving a circular economy through efficient waste management systems and sustainable production methods," President Kenyatta said. "We seek accelerated recovery through green industries and jobs, with institutions such as IGAC."

The President reiterated Kenya's commitment to reducing carbon emissions by building resilience in communities and supporting the transition to a net-zero carbon economy in Africa.

ICPAC is a Climate Center accredited by the World Meteorological Organization, providing climate services to eleven East African nations. The centre aims to create resilience in a region deeply affected by climate change and extreme weather patterns.

Environment and Forestry CS Keriako Tobiko thanked ICPAC for its role in supporting vulnerable communities to adapt to climate change. He noted that climate change in Kenya is increasingly impacting citizens' lives and the environment.
