Borussia Moenchengladbach's stunning 5-0 victory over Bayern Munich in the German Cup second round marked the Bavarians' heaviest defeat in the competition. The hosts' dream start yielded two goals from Ramy Bensebaini and one from Kouadio Kone, putting them in the driving seat before Breel Embolo struck twice early in the second half to seal the game.

The Swiss striker Embolo was instrumental in Gladbach's victory, scoring two goals in the second half to kill off the game. His first goal came in the 15th minute, outplaying the static Bayern backline to thunder a Hofmann cutback past Manuel Neuer. Embolo's second goal was a result of his audacious spot kick, which he sent past Neuer to make it 3-0.

Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann was confined to his home after testing positive for COVID-19, and his assistant coach Dino Topmoeller had to wait until the second half to see some decent attacks from his players. However, before they even got into any rhythm, Gladbach struck again with Embolo beating two defenders to slot the ball in through the legs of Neuer.

"I am absolutely shocked," said Bayern sports director Hasan Salihamidzic. "We were just not there. We did not win a single tackle or challenge in the entire first half." Salihamidzic's comments reflected the Bavarians' disappointing performance, which saw them concede five goals against the mighty Bavarians for the first time since Borussia Dortmund's 5-2 win in the 2012 German Cup final.
