Book Review: A History of the Luo - Abasuba of Western Kenya from AD 1760 - 1940 by Henry Okello Ayot

Published on October 27, 2021

Henry Okello Ayot's book provides a comprehensive history of the Luo-Abasuba people of Western Kenya, tracing their journey from AD 1760 to 1940. The author delves into the complex factors that led to their migration, including conflict, famine, and the slave trade.

According to Ayot, the Luo-Abasuba were initially known as the Abakunta, and their sons played a significant role in shaping the various clans that emerged in Kenya. The Abasuba eventually assimilated into the Luo lifestyle due to the dominant influence of the Luo people.

The book takes the reader through several phases, including the conflict at the Baganda King's courtyard, the migration and settlement, and the dispersal of the various clans into different parts of East Africa. Ayot also explores the Christian influence on African culture, which he believes had a profound impact on the people's way of life.

One of the most fascinating stories in the book revolves around Mbaya, a medicine man who used African magic to defeat the British army. Ayot writes that Mbaya's medicine caused the guns to malfunction, allowing him to charge towards the gunner and kill him with an arrow.

The book is a thought-provoking read that sheds light on the complex history of the Luo-Abasuba people. Ayot's writing style is engaging, and his passion for the subject matter is evident throughout the book.
