Published on October 27, 2021, body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a complex mental health condition that affects individuals worldwide. Characterized by an intense preoccupation with perceived flaws in one's appearance, BDD can lead to significant distress and impairment in daily life.

Understanding the Causes and Symptoms

While the exact causes of BDD are still unknown, research suggests that a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors may contribute to its development. The symptoms of BDD can vary, but common characteristics include:

  • Excessive concern over perceived flaws that are often imperceptible to others
  • Distorted perception of one's appearance, leading to feelings of ugliness or deformity
  • Belief that others are paying negative attention to one's appearance and mocking
  • Constant attempts to hide perceived flaws
  • Excessive comparison of one's appearance to others
  • Perfectionistic tendencies
  • Excessive search for cosmetic and aesthetic procedures

Individuals with BDD may experience varying levels of conviction in their perceptions, ranging from recognizing their excessive concerns to being absolutely convinced of their truth. The more convinced an individual is, the more anguish and disturbance they experience.

Seeking Help and Treatment

Fortunately, effective treatments are available for BDD. Antidepressants, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or clomipramine, have been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms. Cognitive-behavioral therapy, with a specific focus on BDD symptoms, may also be beneficial. Additionally, habit reversal therapy and a combination of pharmacotherapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy have been recommended for severe cases.

It is essential to seek professional help from a psychologist and/or psychiatrist, as a multidisciplinary approach is often necessary to effectively treat BDD.
