Kenya's Sports and Culture Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed has announced plans to construct sports academies in 10 constituencies, with a budget of 750 million shillings.
According to Mohammed, the academies are expected to be completed by June 2022, with the Kenya Academy for Sports having already conducted feasibility studies in 17 constituencies.
"We are going to make sure we work as we did with the stadia; 24 hours a day, with security so that we make sure we complete them as quickly as possible," Mohammed said.
The Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund, which was established in 2018, has collected 30 billion shillings and has so far disbursed 15.2 billion shillings for the construction of stadia, including the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Kisumu.
Construction of the sports academies is expected to start in November 2021, with the government working closely with the Kenya Academy for Sports to ensure that the proposed sites adhere to international standards.
