On October 27, 2021, a ceasefire was brokered in Galmudug, Somalia, following days of bloodshed between the local government and Ahlu Sunna Wal Jamaa (ASWJ) militia.
Regional state President Abdi Karie Qoorqoor announced that the ASWJ, a moderate group that had been government allies, agreed to leave Gur-el town after night-long talks.
According to President Qoorqoor, the group left town and headed north to Godwiil, allowing pro-Galmudug forces to regain control and for residents who had fled to return.
While the terms of the agreement and potential future negotiations remain unclear, President Qoorqoor vowed to defend the state 'at any cost' and called on groups with grievances to present them through legal channels.
