Published on October 27, 2021, a report by Nationmedia.com highlighted the dire situation at Gomero Primary School in Nakaseke District, Central Uganda.
The school, once a thriving institution, has been abandoned by its students and teachers, leaving it vulnerable to invasion by wild animals.
According to district chairperson Ignatius Kiwanuka Koomu, the school's code has been offered to another institution, and the teachers have been transferred to other schools.
However, the parents' failure to cooperate has been cited as a major reason for the school's downfall.
Mr. Kenneth Nyebaza, a former pupil at Gomero between 2002 and 2006, recalled that the school's academic performance had been declining for years, with a total enrollment of only six pupils in February 2020.
Mr. Adam Mujuni, a parent and resident of Gomero Village, disputed the claim that poor academic performance was the core reason for the school's low enrollment, calling for a detailed report on the school's downfall.
The decision to permanently close Gomero Primary School has been met with criticism from Mr. Gordon Musinguzi, the Nakaseke District youth chairperson, who believes it paints a bad picture of the region's education sector.
