Two Makueni teachers narrowly escaped a violent mob's wrath after taking refuge at a police post, where they were accused of embezzling Sh 1 million meant for the community.
The incident occurred after the teachers, based at two local primary schools, allegedly received the money from a top politician who was campaigning in the area earlier in the day.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation, the teachers were given the money to share with the community, including boda boda riders and women selling market merchandise.
However, the teachers allegedly took off with the money, sparking outrage among the community members.
As the situation escalated, the teachers sought refuge at Kambu police post, where they pleaded with the officers to protect them from the angry mob.
“The officers who had a difficult time trying to calm down the mob learnt that the two men seeking refuge behind their backs, had allegedly been given a token of Sh1 Million by a politician who was campaigning in the area earlier in the day,” said Kinoti.
The police officers tried to calm down the mob, but some became impatient and started hurling projectiles at them, demanding that the teachers be released to face instant justice.
Reinforcements from Mtito a Ndei police station arrived, dispersing the mob and allowing the teachers to escape.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
