On October 25, 2021, Apple released the latest version of its operating system, macOS Monterey, which is now available for download. However, before you start the installation process, it's essential to check if your Mac is fully compatible with the new operating system.

macOS Monterey was first announced in June 2021 at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, where it was showcased with new features such as universal control, AirPlay, and spatial audio in FaceTime. The operating system was designed to run on the new MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch.

Compatible Devices

According to Apple's compatibility list, the following devices are compatible with macOS Monterey:

  • Early 2016 and later MacBooks
  • Early 2015 and later MacBook Air
  • Early 2015 and later MacBook Pros
  • Late 2013 and later Mac Pros
  • Late 2014 and subsequent Mac Minis
  • End of 2015 and later iMacs
  • 2017 and subsequent iMac Pro

Incompatible Devices

On the other hand, the following devices are not compatible with macOS Monterey:

  • Mid- to late-2014 and early-2015 iMac
  • Mid-2013 and early-2014 MacBook Air
  • Late 2013 and early 2014 MacBook Pro
  • Early 2015 MacBook

How to Install macOS Monterey

Before you start the installation process, make sure to back up your data. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to install macOS Monterey:

  • Go to System Preferences > Software Update on your Mac.
  • Select macOS Monterey from the drop-down menu and click Upgrade Now.
  • Wait for the installation process to complete.
  • Reboot your laptop.
