Kenya's Boxing Team Heads to Serbia for World Championships

Published on October 26, 2021

Kenya's boxing team, 'Hit Squad', is set to compete in the World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, with three boxers representing the country.

Team captain Nick 'Commander' Okoth will face Alexy De La Cruise of Dominica in the light weight category, while Boniface Mogunde Maina will take on Begiri Alba of Albania in the light middle weight category.

Mogunde Maina is making his debut in the light middle weight category after a long stint in the welter weight category, which is now handled by Joseph 'Shigz' Shigali.

The team's other notable boxer, Hezron Maghanga Sabat, is expected to carry the country's flag and will face Alhandawi Riyad of Jordan in the new weight category.

Kenya's last win in the World Championships was in 1978, when Steve 'Desty' Muchoki defeated Jorge Hernandez of Cuba in the light fly weight category to claim the gold medal.
