On June 19, 2021, Daniel Tarus, alias Ngaile, a reformed bandit, handed over his firearm to security officials in Kerio Valley, marking a significant step towards ending his life of crime.

However, his journey towards redemption was cut short when he was allegedly abducted from a bar near Tot in Endo, Marakwet East, on Friday. His body was later found on the bank of the crocodile-infested River Kerio, with injuries suggesting bullet wounds.

Four months prior, Tarus had surrendered an AK47 rifle to police officers in Kerio Valley, confessing to his past life of cattle rustling. He had taken advantage of an amnesty offered by the government and had become a champion of peace in the region, even starting to reform other youth engaged in banditry.

Residents and local leaders are outraged by Tarus's death, with Elgeyo Marakwet Deputy Governor Wisley Rotich condemning the killing and calling for a speedy investigation. Rotich urged the community to remain calm and seek justice for Tarus and his family.

As the investigation unfolds, the people of Kerio Valley demand answers and justice for the reformed bandit who had turned his life around.
