Rebecca Miano, CEO and Managing Director of Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), delivered a speech virtually to the World Geothermal Congress 2020+1 in Reykjavik, Iceland, on October 25, 2021.
KenGen is the largest electricity generating company in East Africa, producing more than 70% of electricity in Kenya, with 86% generated from renewable sources.
‘As many of you may already know, KenGen is the largest electricity generating company in East Africa; founded in 1954 and has grown over the years, now producing more than 70 per cent of electricity produced in Kenya. Eighty-six per cent of which is generated from renewable sources,” Miano said.
She emphasized the importance of geothermal energy in the future of energy and Kenya's potential as a leader in clean energy.
‘Geothermal energy is a strong contender for the future of energy. I look forward to Africa leading the way towards embracing more clean energy as the renewable energy continent. This potential is the cornerstone of enhancing energy access,” Miano wrote.
