On October 26, 2021, Githunguri Senior Resident Magistrate Victor Asiyo ordered the detention of three security guards for seven days in connection with the death of a 17-year-old student at Komothai Girls Secondary School in Kiambu County.
The guards, Joseph Mutahi, Kennedy Muriuki, and Mary Achieng, will be held at Githunguri police station until next week.
According to detectives, the scope of investigations is being widened to arrest more suspects linked to the death.
The deceased student, Brian Mbage, died after allegedly being assaulted for illegally entering a dormitory at Komothai Girls Secondary School.
A postmortem examination report revealed that Mbage died as a result of excessive bleeding.
His mother, Mary Mbage, expressed doubts about the cause of death, stating that the injuries on her son's body did not show any signs of beatings.
County director of education Victoria Mulili announced that Gathiruini Boys High School, located near Komothai Girls, would remain closed until further notice.
George Karanja, the manager of the security firm providing services to Komothai, stated that students raised an alarm after the intrusion, attracting the attention of guards and staff.
However, Mbage's aunt, Wanjiku Mbage, accused the school of hiding the real cause of death, claiming that the school's management told her that the boy jumped from the fourth floor.
