Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's future was put under the spotlight after his team's 5-0 defeat at home by Liverpool in the Premier League on October 24, 2021.

The humiliating loss, which was United's worst ever defeat at home to their arch-rivals, killed the hype surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo's return to the club and raised questions about Solskjaer's management and coaching of the team.

While United's fans were booed off the field at halftime, there were no chants for Solskjaer to be fired. However, social media and the British media were less forgiving, with several reports suggesting that Solskjaer's position was under threat.

Former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher, a lead analyst on Sky Sports, said that Solskjaer could not compare to his old club's manager Juergen Klopp, Manchester City's Pep Guardiola, or Chelsea's Thomas Tuchel.

"I think Ole has done a good job but to take on Klopp, Tuchel, and Pep, Manchester United need a better manager," he said.

Former United captain and pundit Gary Neville expected Solskjaer to be given a chance to turn things around, saying that the club would hold their nerve and sit with him until the end of the season.

Since the golden era of Alex Ferguson's reign ended in 2013, Manchester United have struggled to win the Premier League title, with managers David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, and Jose Mourinho failing to get the team back to the top.

Solskjaer said that he had no intention of throwing in the towel and was determined to battle on, despite the team's poor results lately.
