On Sunday, 24th October, a highly anticipated match between Gor Mahia and Al Ahly Merowe was set to take place at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi. However, the Sudanese team failed to travel to Nairobi, leading to the cancellation of the match.
According to a statement from Caf, the Sudanese football governing body had officially notified them of Al Ahly Merowe's withdrawal from the competition.
‘Reference the above mentioned match, we would like to inform you that the Sudanese federation have communicated the withdrawal of the club Al Ahly Merowe from the competition,' read part of the Caf’s statement.
As a result, Gor Mahia have been qualified to the Additional 2nd Preliminary round of the competition.
It's worth noting that Gor Mahia had won the first leg 3-1 in a match played on Friday, 15th October at Suez Stadium in Egypt.
With this qualification, Gor Mahia becomes the only team from the Cecafa region to make it to the next stage. They will be joined in the next stage by Rwanda’s APR FC, Tusker FC (Kenya) and Simba SC (Tanzania) who fell out in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.
