On October 23, 2021, a dramatic incident unfolded in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, involving Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip and a 32-year-old woman named Joy Makena.

According to police reports, the incident took place at Kanu Grounds in Nanyuki town, where a confrontation erupted between Makena and Senator Loitiptip.

Police received a tip-off from the public at 2am on Saturday night, and upon investigation, they recovered a firearm with 13 bullets from Senator Anwar's security detail.

Senator Loitiptip claimed he was attacked at a hotel in Nanyuki and had shot in the air to scare his attackers away. However, police stated that the lawmaker's whereabouts were yet to be established.

Onesmus Towett, the County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) for Laikipia, said the police received a call from the senator, who claimed he had been confronted by two women and a man and had shot in self-defence.

Senator Loitiptip was treated for his injuries in Nairobi, while Makena was hospitalized at the Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital with gunshot wounds to her right leg.
