On Mashujaa Day, October 20, 2021, a tragic incident occurred at the University of Nairobi's Upper Kabete campus. A fifth-year veterinary medicine student was found dead in her room, with her lifeless body dangling from a scarf tied to the door.

According to sources, the student's classmates reported that she was in high spirits before her death, which has left the campus community in shock.

University of Nairobi Director of Corporate Affairs John Orindi confirmed the student's death, stating that he was still waiting for a conclusive report from the university's security team.

Mr. Orindi also revealed that the student's parents were aware of her death and that some drugs used in the treatment of depression were found in her room, suggesting that she may have been battling depression.

Investigations into the death are ongoing, with Kabete Sub-County Police Commander Francis Wahome leading the probe to ascertain the cause of the student's death.

Unfortunately, this incident is not an isolated case, as cases of death by suicide among university students have risen in recent years. In 2018 alone, at least 12 university students died by suicide.
