On October 22, 2021, the National Treasury announced the disbursement of Sh 2.4 million to support food intervention in arid and semi-arid counties hit by drought, declared a national disaster.
President Uhuru Kenyatta had directed the Ministry of Ukuru-Yattani to channel an additional Sh 1.5 billion to support affected communities through the National Livestock Offtake Programme the previous day.
Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna stated, 'For food intervention activities, the Government has availed Sh 2.4 billion for October and November. This amount has been boosted by a further Sh 1.5 billion that Kenyatta directed to be set aside for livestock off-stake.'
Interventions by the government include hunger safety net cash transfer and inua jamii programs, currently ongoing in Kilifi, Kwale, Tana River, Lamu, Turkana, Samburu, Baringo, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Isiolo, and Kitui counties.
According to Oguna, the distribution will take place in the next few weeks, with the government having mobilized sufficient food stocks to be distributed to all affected counties.
The government assured Kenyans that no amount of effort would be spared to provide necessary intervention to address the drought situation in the country.
