On October 22, 2021, Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye will begin a three-day state visit to Tanzania, marking a significant diplomatic engagement between the two East African nations.
According to a statement by the Tanzania Foreign Affairs ministry, President Ndayishimiye will arrive at Dodoma Airport and be officially received by his host, President Samia Suluhu Hassan, at Chamwino State House.
The two leaders will hold bilateral talks, followed by President Ndayishimiye laying the foundation stone for a $180 million fertiliser factory in Nala, near the capital Dodoma, built by the Burundian firm Itracom.
During his visit, President Ndayishimiye will also travel to the semiautonomous archipelago of Zanzibar, where he will hold talks with President Hussein Ali Mwinyi on Saturday.
On Sunday, he will rejoin President Suluhu for a tour of the Dar es Salaam port, the standard gauge railway construction site, and the Kwala Dry Port, where Burundi was allocated 10 hectares.
Landlocked Burundi heavily depends on the Dar port and the Central Corridor for imports and exports of goods.
President Ndayishimiye's visit comes three months after President Samia visited Bujumbura in July 2021.
Notably, this is President Ndayishimiye's second visit to Tanzania, following his first visit in September 2020, when he met with the late President John Magufuli in Kigoma, close to the Burundi border.
