On October 20, 2021, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced the lifting of the nationwide dusk-to-dawn curfew that had been in place since March the previous year.
The curfew was initially imposed as a measure to curb the spread of Covid-19 in Kenya.
Speaking at the 58th Mashujaa Day celebrations at the Wang'uru Stadium in Kirinyaga County, President Kenyatta said, "I hereby order and direct the nationwide dusk-dawn curfew to be vacated with immediate effect."
The move follows appeals from Kenya's business community and lobbying from churches to lift restrictions and allow more congregants to gather.
President Kenyatta also noted that 5 million adults had been vaccinated against Covid-19, but warned that the country was not yet out of the woods.
