On October 20, 2021, Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta announced the lifting of the dusk-to-dawn curfew that had been in place since March the previous year.
The curfew was initially imposed as a measure to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the country.
Speaking at the 58th Mashujaa Day celebrations at the Wang'uru Stadium in Kirinyaga County, President Kenyatta said, "I hereby order and direct the nationwide dusk-dawn curfew to be vacated with immediate effect."
The announcement was met with cheers from the crowd.
President Kenyatta also noted that five million adults had been vaccinated against Covid-19, and while the surge of coronavirus infections had dropped, the country was not yet out of the woods.
