On July 4, 2019, Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana announced a major milestone in the county's healthcare sector: a successful knee replacement surgery had been conducted in Makindu hospital, marking a significant achievement in the governor's efforts to provide quality healthcare to his constituents.
With an investment of over Ksh 130 million, the Makindu hospital has established itself as one of the best health facilities in Makueni county. The governor's commitment to healthcare has been recognized, and he has been named as one of the best performing governors with a clean financial record by the Auditor General's report.
"The operation entails removing the arthritic articulating surfaces of the Distal Femur and Proximal Tibia and replacing them with a knee prosthesis," explained Governor Kibwana, highlighting the complexity of the procedure.
Patients with severe knee joint arthritis who are not responding to medical treatment will benefit from this surgical procedure, which was conducted by an able orthopaedic surgeon based at the New Makindu Hospial Trauma Centre.
The news came on the heels of the county's success in the first annual Quality Healthcare Kenyan Awards Gala, where Makueni was voted as the best county in healthcare management. The county had also introduced a telemedicine health programme, which uses telecommunication infrastructure to link patients from remote health centres with doctors based at the county referral hospital.
