On October 15, 2021, a significant milestone was achieved for hawkers in Kakamega town when they were registered as a Sacco with the Ministry of Co-operatives.

Shieywe Ward Member of County Assembly Hon. Job Mwamto, who spearheaded the registration, handed over the certificate to the hawkers in the name of Kakamega Mali Mali Hawkers Sacco.

With this registration, the hawkers will now have the confidence to apply for tenders in the Kakamega County government and other places, as they are now duly registered.

‘These Hawkers have been side-lined for many years, but now it is not going to be business as usual because with this kind of unity you have the strength to build a formidable financial base in this town and beyond,' Hon. Mwamto reiterated.

As part of his efforts to support the Sacco, Hon. Mwamto donated Sh200,000 to the Sacco to enable it to start operations and disburse small loans to members.

He also pledged to present the Sacco issue to Governor Wycliffe Oparanya's office to fast-track the process of the hawkers Sacco working with the county government of Kakamega.

Alfred Oyalo, a representative of the hawkers, thanked Hon. Mwamto for his efforts, highlighting the struggles they have faced in the hands of shylocks who charge high loan interests.

Collins Andulu, the Vice Chairman of the Sacco, expressed optimism about the future, stating that the registration was a significant step towards their financial success and urging more hawkers and business people to join the Sacco.
