On October 15, 2021, the Treasury announced that it had borrowed Sh2 billion to undertake the expansion of the Eastern bypass in Nairobi, a move expected to ease congestion on the road.
The Eastern bypass, which stretches from Thika Road to Mombasa Road, was built by the Kibaki administration in 2013 as part of the Vision 2030 infrastructure projects.
Initially, the road served its purpose well, providing a quick route to the airport without going through the city centre. However, over the years, it has become congested due to the growth of businesses and residential areas along the corridor.
Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia has previously stated that it was a mistake not to build the road as a dual carriage in the first place.
While timelines for the expansion have not been provided, it is likely that the project will begin in 2022. The expansion is expected to ease congestion on the road and improve traffic flow in the area.
